Wake The President

Some people will tell you there are only two types of people in Glasgow: neds and art students. But listen to that false tale of two cities at your peril, because between the cracks in that hackneyed picture comes the sound of this city’s latest purveyors of Scottish pop. The twins that front Wake the President were brought up on the hard-knock streets of Maryhill but earned their stripes knocking around the council libraries, drinkingdens and underwear-strewn bedrooms of Glasgow’s bohemian West End.

Teenage Jesus and The Jerks

Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were an influential New York City, New York, United States post-punk group who formed part of the city’s no wave movement. Pink

Suicide is an American duo that was one component of the late 1970s punk scene on the Lower East Side of New York City, USA. They are also considered to be one of the precusors of the no wave movement that started in the mid-70s and went into the mid-80s.

The band consists of Alan Vega and Martin Rev, who used farfisa organs, synthesizers, and drum machines to create their trademark sound. While widely unconsidered and largely disliked during their beginnings, their 1977 self-titled album is considered to be one of the most influential albums of the punk movement and has influenced countless others, including The Jesus and Mary Chain and R.E.M. The grander influence of Suicide’s electronic primitivism can be heard in the later music movements of synth-pop, electroclash, techno, and industrial music.

The Band in Heaven

If you dig the spacey, droning haze of NYC’s seminal Velvet Underground, Tx.’s primordial psych-pioneers the 13th Floor Elevators or even the dreamy revivalist mantras of such modern-day revisionists as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Warlocks, this buzzworthy Orlando quintet will make you smile, nod out and fumble for a massive glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

Von Haze

Hailing from Brooklyn, Von Haze combines tawdry synths with gothic guitar drone. While comparisons to other acts, such as next-big-thing The XX are inevitable thanks to the restrained male and female vocals of duo Travis Caine and Katherine Kin, the music of Von Haze is darker and more minimalist than the British synth-poppers.
